Model-Based Design of Complex Systems Lab

The Model-Based Design of Complex Systems (MBDCS) Lab represents a group of dedicated students and researchers focused on addressing challenging research problems from a systems perspective.  Prof. Shawn Midlam-Mohler is the advisor/supervisor of this group; however, the group works closely with many other faculty members and researchers within the Ohio State’s engineering departments.  The MBCS Lab is housed within and proudly part of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), the Simulation Innovation and Modeling Center (SIMCenter), and the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The “model-based” aspect of the lab captures the use of computer aided engineering tools in the broadest sense.  By “design”, we are capturing a collective interest and experience in product design, where product refers to both physical systems as well as virtual constructs like control algorithms and calibration process.  Finally, “complex systems” implies a focus on addressing complicated, real-world engineering challenges – such as internal combustion engines or hybrid electric vehicle powertrains.
